Synopsis: Mara Dyer once believed she could run from her past.

She can’t.

She used to think her problems were all in her head.

They aren’t.

She couldn’t imagine that after everything she’s been through, the boy she loves would still be keeping secrets.

She’s wrong.

In this gripping sequel to The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, the truth evolves and choices prove deadly. What will become of Mara Dyer next?

Cover: Once again I fell in love with Michelle Hodkin’s covers for her novels. I love the darkness this one emanates, as if telling the reader these books are dismal and dark. I love the whole underwater aspect that gives off a whole foreboding and mysterious vibe I completely adored.

My Thoughts: This sequel picks up immediately right after Mara Dyer got kidnapped by her ex-boyfriend, Jude, who survived the collapse of the asylum in the first novel. Right when the story begins, Mara woke up in a hospital where the doctors said she tried to commit suicide when really Jude made her slit her wrists. Her parents then forced her to attend a type of school for troubled teens in hopes of her getting better from her “delusions” of Jude. As she attended the school where she reunited with the ever sarcastic and lovable best friend, Jamie, Mara still believed Jude was plotting against her. She began to experience black outs and vivid hallucinations that makes the reader wonder what was true and what was false with this unreliable narrator. Along with the hallucinations, Mara began to receive threats from who she believed was Jude who was plotting to hurt her and the ones she loved.

Noah Shaw, Mara’s love interest, played a bigger role in this book than the first novel, trying to help her find out how to control her special ability to end lives as he learned to heal people. Mara eventually had a budding notion that her powers would ultimately hurt Noah and got warnings to stay away from him which created a certain mystery to how powerful she really was. Eventually Mara went on a retreat with her “school” to an isolated island away from her family. This island was the producer of the shiver inducing moments Mara lived through along with the thrilling scenes that made this book significantly scarier than the first. This story was filled to the brim with suspenseful scenes, puzzling moments,  and blush inducing parts between Noah and Mara who still managed to find time to fall completely in love with each other.

Words cannot describe my love for Michelle Hodkin’s extreme talent for writing unforgettable novels. This is one of those series where each sequel seems to be better than the last. Mara’s narration never failed to entrap me in her world of confusion and hallucinations she had to deal with at every moment of this story. I loved the darkness of this novel with Jude threatening her, and I also loved Noah and Mara working together to figure out their abilities and whether or not they were the only ones with these powers. This book had so many beautiful moments with Noah and Mara’s building relationship that I couldn’t get enough of. You won’t regret picking up this series bursting with action, mystery, and romance fit for any YA reader. The ending is especially stunning and will leave you wanting more from the utterly talented Michelle Hodkin.
